Besuch des Erlebnisbauernhofs Grödig

In September we went to a farm in Grödig. It called “Erlebnisbauernhof Grödig” and it really was an ‘Erlebnis’! We saw so many different animals and learnt a lot of new interesting facts. We were also allowed to feed the animals.

Veronica hat uns erklärt, dass es zwei Arten gibt wie man Tiere füttern kann. Bei manchen Tieren streckt man die Hand aus zum Beispiel bei dem Pfau, den Eseln und den Pferden. Manche Tiere konnten wir mit zwei Fingern füttern, beispielsweise bei den Ziegen, Kaninchen und Alpakas.

There were many peacocks strutting around the farm. They were all males, no females! Veronika and Sonja told us that in spring, when the male peacocks want to impress the female peacocks, they fan out their long, colourful tail feathers. They also do this to scare away predators. At the moment, they do not spread out their tail feathers as their new feathers are growing back. We also learnt that peacocks are able to fly, and they sleep up in trees to stay safe from predators.

After feeding the peacocks, we were allowed to feed the alpacas. It is safe to give them the food by holding the pellets between your two fingers. Some of us were scared to feed them though, because we were afraid, they would spit at us. Alpacas only spit if they are annoyed, jealous or want to fight to see who the boss is. We learnt that they are smaller than llamas and that their fur is of better quality. You can easily tell the difference between llamas and alpacas. Llamas have long, banana-shaped ears that curve inward. Alpacas have shorter, straight ears that are more pointed. Most of us thought that the alpacas were really cute and fun to watch.

Wir haben auch Esel und Pferde gesehen. Das Besondere bei dem großen Pferd war, dass es ein blaues und ein braunes Auge hatte. Wir haben auch die Schildkröten besucht. Wir haben gelernt, dass die Schildkröten nur wenn die Sonne scheint herauskommen und sie überwintern in einem gewärmten Haus. Eine von den Schildkröten war schon ziemlich alt: 60 Jahre.

Im Stall trafen wir ein Kalb, das erst drei Tage alt war. Wir durften zuschauen, wie das Kalb gefüttert wurde. Der Dackel Frieda hat versucht mit dem Kalb zu kuscheln.

Towards the end we fed the goats. There was one billy goat, lots of nanny goats and a few baby goats, which are called kids in English. The adult goats were very greedy and wouldn’t let the kids eat. We learnt that goats have horns. Horns are different to antlers. Antlers fall off, but horns do not.

Wir hatten sehr viel Spaß und es war ein tolles Erlebnis auf dem Bauernhof in Grödig.
